During the Edo period, Okiku, a beautiful and humble servant, dedicatedly served Aoyama Tessan, the chief retainer of the samurai lord. Her loyalty captured her master’s heart, yet she remained true to her modest origins.
Blinded by false accusations, Tessan confronted Okiku, demanding the return of the missing plate. Tormented and desperate, she tirelessly searched for the lost item but found no trace. Overwhelmed by relentless pressure and the fear of dishonoring her master, Okiku met a despairing end, thrown into a well, her spirit forever bound to the depths of Himeji Castle.
From this darkness emerged the vengeful and sorrowful Ghost of Okiku, haunting the living, particularly those who tread upon the castle grounds. Legend speaks of Okiku’s ghost counting plates endlessly, reaching nine before letting out a blood-curdling scream.
